Day 119
---
Since we're supposed to get hit with a big winter storm over the next few days, I decided to head out and attempt an outdoor run with the jogging stroller before the blizzard hits. I haven't done it yet, until today and it was definitely different than running on the treadmill. I took the dog with me too, which in some ways was good, but in other ways bad. She runs faster, so she kept me going. But she was also edgy from being cooped up in the house for too long and was just sort of a pain to bring with. We still went for a mile run/walk, before I dropped her off and went for another 1/2 mile with just the stroller. It was cold out, but I was on the treadmill for 1.75 miles before I headed outside, so I stayed pretty warm. Aubrey fell asleep and Kenzie seemed to enjoy going "fast", so I think when the weather gets better I'll try taking everyone out for more outdoor runs.

Kenzie would not sit still OR look at the camera when I asked her to, which was also frustrating. At least I got a few shots that I liked.

Steve Madden boots

I "dressed up" just for the hell of it today. I wouldn't really say I'm dressed up though. Just a black knit skirt, striped t-shirt and cardigan, red tights and boots. It's so wet and slushy outside that it was annoying that my jeans were all wet on the bottom yesterday, just from the simple trip I took to the store yesterday. So boots and skirt should work today. And it's not that cold out, another bonus.

The hair color directions said no longer than 45 minutes, so I rinsed it, dried it and then decided to go ahead and put more on and keep it on for another 30 minutes. It only lightened it a touch more. Even when my hair was much lighter in color, I could almost never get it to a white blonde shade. I got it pretty close once, and when I look back at those photos I can't believe I had my hair that light back then. I know a professional would be able to do it, since they can use toner to get the red out.

Since fall of 2007, I've had my hair dark, and surprisingly kept it dark all this time. It's probably the closest to my natural color, but I was getting bored of it and wanted to do something funkier with it. So now I have this orangey blonde streak. Fortunately, I happen to love orange. haha. I didn't want to try lightening it anymore in fear that my hair might actually break off, but I can live with this color. It definitely is funky. It actually reminded me of a time when I was in college that I lightened all of my hair and got a similar shade. Fortunately, I was in art school so having orange hair (intentional or not) kind of worked in my favor. As much as people I know tell me how much they liked my hair blonde, I doubt I'll be doing that again anytime soon. There was just too much maintenance involved. I don't mind roots that much, but after awhile the brassy tones really annoyed me. I haven't had that problem with my hair being darker.

We could have probably have stayed out a little longer, but I didn't want her to get too cold.

Derby Lite was tonight. It had been a couple of weeks since we did falling drills and for some reason tonight I was just not quite as on as I had been. I think part of the problem was that I was not getting enough speed, so I ended up going straight down rather than sliding too many times. I'm also finding that I really need to strengthen my core muscles. I've been adding more core exercises to my daily workouts to help have less back pain at derby. Tonight we did a lot of low-level skating which resulted in an achy back. I guess I could use the excuse that I just had a baby 3 months ago, but I've never really had a strong core. I will with derby!

John planned on watching the Bears game in the afternoon, and I just planned on doing not much of anything. I like having those days once in awhile. Of course, its hard to pull off with a 2 and a half year old and a 3 month old. For the most part, it was a relaxing day. I played dolls with Kenzie while Aubrey sat nearby and watched. Aubrey had some rough teething moments just before dinnertime. After what felt like an eternity of crying, she finally fell asleep all wrapped up in a blanket and in my arms. She woke up to eat and is now falling asleep again. I'm hoping it's for the night.

Since John wanted to do a partial water change anyway, it worked out so that we could move the tank. I wanted to get it off the low coffee table (currently being used as an end table) and move it to the small four-cube Expedit that we have in our dining room. It wasn't very visible over on the coffee table, and now it looks much better where we have it. Apart from that, we didn't do too much else. I think I'm going to go watch a movie now. John is playing video games, so I might be watching it alone. Or maybe with a sleeping baby. Speaking of the baby, she's been rolling over a lot these days, and tonight I brought up the exersaucer thingy from the basement. I cleaned it up as best I could and thought maybe she might like to sit in it. Because she's little, I took some blankets to wrap around her and keep her in place. She seemed to like it. Kenzie sure enjoyed playing with (bothering?) her there. I'll just have to keep a close eye on her, since she is a little young for it. I think she was getting bored lying and rolling around under her baby gym. At least this will switch things up for her a little bit.

It's super cute, and looks great with our decor. Since I hadn't taken a photo of it yet, I decided it would be today's photo.

19/365 /// Week 3 of 52

I ordered some new running shoes over the weekend and they arrived on Monday. I finally tried them out today. Super lightweight and comfy, though I need to make sure I wear socks when I run...at least until I break them in. I managed to get a 3 mile run in, even though I could feel a blister forming about halfway through. I'm wearing these around the house now just to help break them in a little more. I had a decent pair of running shoes, but they didn't have enough cushion for my running style. I'm hoping these will be the magic shoes that help me want to keep running and running. I know it's unlikely, but worth trying, right? I only have a few more weeks before I bump my running from 3 miles to 3.50, so I hope these shoes will help me with my training for the 8k in April. I know an 8k might not be a lot for you runners out there, but I'm not a runner at all, and this will be a big challenge for me. But also a great thing for me to accomplish.

Derby last night was so much fun. Two gals from the Windy City Rollers taught our class (Rose Feratu and Pominatrix). We learned how to do crossovers, swizzle, and duck walk to run/skate. We also practiced our plough stops and t-stops, and did a couple of relay races. After about 90 minutes of skating, we did some good strength training moves off skate that should help with some of the moves on skates. I think I'll be adding these moves to my regular workouts to help strengthen my legs and core. They're hard to do, but definitely worth it.

Then she lined up some of her toys on the bench. The Eeyore that you see in the photo is one of her most loved toys. He has been through the wash several times, but as you can see he is looking pretty shabby again. This one was a gift from someone else, but awhile back I had asked my mom that if she ever saw it to get it so we had an extra. She did find one, and I had put him away in a closet so that he could be a backup if this one was ever lost. Tonight when Kenzie was going to bed she was asking for Eeyore. She knew he was downstairs. But I knew I had a nice, new clean one in the closet. I figured it was time to go ahead and get him out. When I showed him to her, the look on her face was priceless. She was so excited to see him all clean, with his hair sticking up the way it was supposed to (before going through the wash numberous times). She was so happy. I know I am not going to be able to throw this old one away yet, but at least now she has a nice, clean one and she seems really happy about it.

Keeping a two and a half year old's attention for a couple of hours is not the easiest though. John walked around with her, and Netflix on the phone was a saviour at one point. Nothing quite like being at the roller derby with your two year old watching Caillou on the phone. Have I mentioned how much I hate that show? It does keep her attention though, so despite how much I am not a fan of it, I know I can have some quiet while she watches it. Or if a tantrum is about to happen out in public, Caillou can prevent it from even happening...phew.

Ahh...the end of the week. Finally. We're going to attempt a family dinner date tonight. Our first Friday night dinner since Aubrey was born. We're planning to check out the new restaurant that just opened down the block from our house. Hopefully, it will go well.

I finished off my week with some circuit training/weights and a 2-mile run. Phew. I burned over 2100 calories this week, so that's pretty nice. That's not even including the little neighborhood walks I've taken this week. I planned to just do the weight training today, but then decided to go ahead and run/walk a mile. After I hit the mile mark, I decided to go ahead and go another mile. I've been getting addicted to working out. Not that I love it, but I feel really guilty the days I don't. Especially if I haven't done anything else apart from sit around the house. I'm trying to keep things switched up enough so I don't get bored. I'm looking forward to the warmer weather this year, so I can get outside and switch things up a bit.

I've been doing really well, which I'm happy about. My skating tonight was much more confident than last week, and I had some good speed going on some of the drills. I just need to work on stopping so I can get that down.

Clarks Originals

I went to a clothing swap at my friend Erica's house today. I brought purses and shoes with me, and ended up finding new homes for just about all of it. I went with a big box, and came home with a t-shirt that I am going to try and turn into a dress for Kenzie since it has a picture of Grover on the front, a beaded necklace, and a silky scarf that I will probably use to tie my hair back. These shoes had nothing to do with the swap apart from being worn there today.

In the afternoon, we went to lunch at Alfie's in the 'burbs today for John's dad's 70th birthday. We've been there a few times. They have pretty decent pub food, and it was a good place to go on a cold day. Afterwards we went back to his parent's condo for coffee and just to visit for a little while longer.

We got home sometime around 6:00. I had to get things sorted out for a clothing swap at a friend's house tomorrow. I have mostly shoes and purses. This week has been an odd week. For some reason, I feel like I'm not getting that much accomplished in the day, even though I feel like I should be. I've been staying up too late, which leads to sleeping in longer than I should. Fortunately, Aubrey is a really good baby, and I can sleep until 9 a.m. most days. Kenzie is a pretty good sleeper too. Sometimes she wakes up and just plays in her room for awhile before she knocks on the door for me to open it. She has this doorknob cover on the inside of the door, and she just never figured out how to open the door when that is on there. John says she's in baby prison when I keep her in there, but I like the doorknob cover for a few reasons: 1) she can't come out of her room at 7:00 and wake up Aubrey, which is exactly what she does as soon as she is out of her room 2) she can't lock herself in her room accidentally, and 3) mama can sleep a little longer if Aubrey stays asleep and isn't bothered by her toddler sister. Once Kenzie is officially potty trained I'll have to make sure she can get to the bathroom, but since she is being stubborn about potty training I'm not that concerned about that right now.

Although I'm making time to make sure I get a workout in at least 4 days a week, I feel like I'm not getting much else done some days. I had wanted to try and get out and do some errands this week, but only managed to get out one day. I also wanted to try and finish working on some baby booties (part of the delay in what I started is because I have yet to get to the fabric store and get some things I need for them). I think it's the cold. I use it as an excuse to not leave the house. But it has been cold, and it has been a hassle trying to get out with two kids. Fortunately, I treated myself to a new stroller that can be a single or double and that finally arrives tomorrow. I'm hopeful that this will make my small trips out much easier.

Riedell R3 Derby Skates

As I've written previously, I am starting a program called Derby Lite through the Oak Park Park District. My first class starts tonight. As I've also written before, I am nervous, anxious and excited. Tonight will be a good solid two hours of me time...just me. No time to worry about the kids, or what's going on everywhere else. Just me. And that's something I really need right now. TIme for myself.

I'm doing another 52 Weeks project this year. Since this is my third time around with the 52 Weeks project, I am switching it up a bit. This year will be all about the shoes. This should be fun. After all I am a shoe fanatic. So to start things off, these are my derby skates.

Tomorrow I start Derby Lite. It's so rare that I do things on my own anymore. I always have the kids or I'm with John. So a little me time is a good thing. I'm excited, anxious and nervous. I'm looking forward to seeing how well I can skate in a big open space. Skating around my basement or living room definitely does not give me enough space to really skate. Though it has helped me get used to the feeling of being on skates again, since I haven't been on skates since I was probably 17 or 18. John told me that he hasn't seen me this excited about something other than shopping in a long time. And I guess he's right. It has been a long time.

Here we go again...365 part 2.

I decided to do another year of photos, because I really enjoy being able to document things happening in and around my life. What better way to do that than to snap a photo and tell a little story? Of course, I don't put everything that has happened in my life out there for everyone to read, but I do try to summarize things or write about something important that may have happened. So here's to documenting 2011. As we ring in the new year, everyone seems to have high hopes for what is ahead. I feel like 2011 will be a good year.

I've never really been one to make New Year's resolutions, but this year I have decided to make goals for myself. Now that we are done having children, this year is going to be a good year to focus on raising our family and improving things in our life.

First, I am signed up to run my first 8k in April. Training for that will be key. I've never been a runner, nor have I ever really enjoyed it, but adding running to my life will hopefully keep me on track to losing weight and getting healthy. I'm already improving my endurance, and hopefully by April I will be able to run those 5 miles at a reasonable pace.

Second, I am breaking out of my comfort zone and have signed up for Derby Lite. It's been such a long time that I have done anything on my own without John or a good friend alongside. Derby Lite starts on Monday, and I am really looking forward to those 2 hours once a week to skate and exercise and focus on me. No time to worry about the family or what else is going on in my life. Plus, I'll hopefully meet new and interesting people, all while having fun skating and getting fit.

Third, now that the holidays are over I plan to get back into sewing baby booties and get my little handmade shop going again. My goal is to get one pair of booties made a week and get them up on Etsy. I have a feeling I might have a slow start just trying to balance that out with the time with the kids during the day, but it's something I enjoy and people seem to like them.

Fourth, have I mentioned that 2011 is about getting healthy? I don't have a specific goal in terms of the number on the scale, but being more fit and healthy is on the list for this year. Keeping up with exercise and eating better are key. Of course, we ate poorly today, but we'll get on track.

Fifth, a small goal, but an important one...getting Kenzie potty trained and deciding on the school situation. She turns 3 in July, so we'll need to have all that sorted out at some point.

I'm also going to do this 365 project again and another 52 weeks project. I know there are other things to accomplish this year, but those are the main things I have had on my list. This is going to be a year of change. Good and positive change.
