halloween fun
--
I recently found my wigs from past Halloween costumes, so I thought I'd play around with some photos. Kenzie told me I looked like a teacher with this wig and glasses on. Apparently, this is how teachers are portrayed on the shows she watches. She then brought some books to me and pretended to return them to the librarian. funny how kids minds work.

it was rainy this morning, so it was a good day for cuffed jeans and chucks. I've had these for several years now, and they are still one of my favorite pairs.

Tonight at derby practice, some of the ladies are going to be wearing costumes. Unfortunately, I do not have any costumes (that I would want to sweat and skate in, at least), so I opted to go super heavy on eye makeup. I think I might go darker before I leave to make it look like I have black eyes. Smeared red lipstick might be fun too.

I realized late last night that I did not take any photos yesterday. So using two of me from today to catch up.

I don't know, I just liked this one even though it is blurry.
I had derby practice this morning, which was fun. We did some blocking drills, a paceline, and a jammer drill/race. I like that I think I surprise people and am a fast skater. I've never really been into sports or any kind of team sport, but with derby I found a sport that I enjoy and challenge myself with. When I started with Derby Lite almost a year ago, it was something completely outside my comfort zone. I didn't know what to expect, but now I push myself to try harder, to skate lower, to skate faster, to work on cross overs, to skate fast and stop fast...so many things that a year ago I didn't think I would be doing.
We went to see the last home bout for the Windy City Rollers tonight, and while we were there (with both kids) John and I were talking about taking the kids to the bouts. He commented that he feels its a really good experience to take the girls because there aren't a lot of sports out there for women. When you understand roller derby and what's going on, it's not a spectator sport with women beating each other up, it's a competitive sport with fearless, tough, strong women, and I hope that my girls grow up to be fearless, tough, strong women. And I hope that if I ever decide to take my derby life to the next level that my daughters will look at me, and see me as fearless, tough and strong.

Rainy and cold today. My hair looks funky, but I didn't take any better pictures today. I was actually trying to get a shot of Aubrey in her hat, preferably without the pacifier, but she insisted on keeping it in her mouth.

chocolate croissant and chocolate covered bacon from bleeding heart bakery
--
after dropping kenzie off at school, I decided to stop at the bleeding heart bakery over on chicago to pick up some goodies. I got a few cupcakes and cake balls, and had to try the chocolate covered bacon. last minute, I decided to pick up a couple of chocolate croissants. Best. Chocolate. Croissant. Ever. Ok, well, maybe not ever, but definitely the best I have had since we were in Paris in 2007. Panera Bread has a pretty good one too, but this was by far the best and closest to what we ate for breakfast many days in Paris. mmm...so good. I have one more that I got for John. Part of me hopes he'll forget to eat it, just so I can have it tomorrow.

hello kitty booties
--
This is partly why I was m.i.a. on flickr. I had a custom baby booties and burp cloth order that I needed to finish by tonight to take with me to derby practice. Two of my derby friends put in orders, so I was busy sewing since yesterday afternoon. Four burp cloths, and three pairs of baby booties. Not much, but when you add in taking care of small children while also sewing it does take some time, and concentration. I made these today, after running to the fabric store in search of Hello Kitty fabric. This was all they had (though I know I saw some other prints the last time I was there), but they turned out really cute. And my friend liked them too.

I love the fall. The crunchy leaves, the changing colors. I hate that winter follows, but I do love this time of year. Now if only the temperatures would drop just a bit more, so I can start wearing my fall clothes again.

the colors in these dahlia's were absolutely gorgeous. these photos do not do them justice. If I could have a garden full of these, year round, I would.

It's a little strange to not be selecting photos for Aubrey's 365 now that she is a year old. It would make things easier when it comes time to select photos for the photobooks, but I just don't think I can focus on it anymore. It was hard enough to finish her 365 as it was. Anyway, here she is walking around outside. It's pretty amazing how well she walks. She is quite the little mover.

We met Stephanie Izard (Top Chef/Girl & the Goat) tonight at Trucking Thursdays at Ethyl's. It was such a nice night that I just mentioned to John about going to pick up dinner. He told me he thought he saw Stephanie Izard there on his way home, so we decided to go and check it out. Sure enough, she was there. We got pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw, and squash soup with bread from the food truck she was with. mmm...yum. The soup was my fave. Kenzie didn't care for it, but Aubrey sure liked it. I think I'll be making some squash soup in the near future since I do have two Delicata Squashes in my fridge right now anyway.

It was Aubrey's birthday today, so I did a little shoot. I attempted shooting at a lower ISO, which is a challenge with a squirming child, but I was happy with how most of these turned out.
A year ago, I was feeling under the weather but had to head out and run some errands. I came home and rested in the afternoon. John picked up dinner from Panera Bread and I was attempting to eat it around 6:30 when I just felt sick to my stomach. By 7:00 I was pretty sure I needed to head to the hospital. Aubrey was born at 8:55 p.m. One of my brother's commented on my Facebook post that Aubrey's gift to me was a short labor. Very very true.

Unfortunately, Aubrey is not in sharp focus, but she did look cute just hanging out in the jumper. She's wearing her new owl jammies that we got her for her birthday. We got big sister the same sets of pj's too.

We had a small party for Aubrey yesterday to celebrate her first birthday (which is actually on Wednesday). We just had immediate family. It went pretty well. I just now had time to go through the photos. Though this isn't completely in focus, I liked it.

Cake balls - Red velvet mixed with cream cheese frosting and dipped in chocolate

Baked brownies this morning, then baked some cake balls for Aubrey's first birthday party tomorrow. Just having a small gathering of family at the house. Her actual birthday isn't until Wednesday, but this weekend worked out better for her party. Next weekend we'll be doing something for my grandpa's 90th birthday. Everything is pretty much ready for tomorrow now.
